Ian McWhinnie

Ian studied painting at Glasgow School of Art from 1970-1974 and spent a long and successful career as an art teacher specialising in ceramics. With demand for his work increasing, Ian gave up the teaching and set up his own art studio in 2002, producing hand-painted and wheel thrown ceramic pieces.

His striking and distinctive designs worked equally well as ceramics or paintings and it wasn’t long before the demand for his paintings was so strong that he decided to focus all his energy on the brush.

Ian’s paintings depict serious figures of strong character, closely assembled and cropped tightly within the frame. This new series, painted especially for JaM Eton, draws heavily on Italian references and features single and double portraits.
